Buck Residence
This Private Residence is a beautiful and classic Chicago design. This traditional building type has a single floor with an unfinished basement and a low finished attic. Our clients desired more space and to potentially create a master bedroom and bathroom with modern amenities. The project consisted of 3 main components:
- Reconfiguring the Mechanical and Ventilation to optimally provide air throughout the renovated space. Before air was provided through an HVAC system installed in the crawl space and only vented through one side of the attic.
- Cutting out the existing roof and building up two dormers. One would contain the master bedroom and the other would be home to the bathroom. The previous attic bedroom would now serve as a walk in closet.
- Modifying the stair up to the attic. The existing stair was very narrow. By opening up the wall on the first floor and moving the bedroom wall over 2 feet it is now possible to bring furniture up and down from the second floor.
Raising the roof was not feasible within the budget so dormers, while not optimal for heavy snow or water drainage, were the best solution. By cutting out a section of roof rafters and installing two low pitch dormers it was possible to fit the program elements into the space with at least 8 foot clearance throughout the space.
